Its Light Outside

Alternative Lighting

The most creative lighting can make the most of any situation and this includes the outside of the house. Generally we get very tied up with our mood lighting in the lounge, the correct positioning of the kitchen lighting and the romantic glow of the bedroom. But - what about the garden and the driveway? These are places where we are more likely to trip over in the dark than any room in the house and yet it is left to become a ‘no light’ zone.

It could be argued that a driveway doesn’t need to be lit and the garden is not a place to go wandering in the night. Not true. There a re plenty of opportunities to trip over on a drive way after dark as there are out on the street – actually more because there are street lights. So, the answer is to get some of those energy efficient solar powered lamps. They have pointed ends as in garden stakes and can be driven into the ground alongside the drive. The solar power source is built up during the daytime. Bear in mind you will probably have to shut the gate to the driveway after bringing the car in, so there is an unlit walk to take. The solar lamps will make a paved light way for you, and you will not be concerned about falling over the toy scooter, the cat or the rubbish bin. These work well in the garden as well. On a summer night, when the barbeque is in full flow, the guests will be more than impressed with the array of lights across the lawn and amongst the shrubs. It gives a nice effect.

Another potential lighting feature outside is the corner lamp. Mounted on the corner of the house they are attractive and can be activated by a sensor such that when someone goes past the sensor it switches on. This can be a nuisance however as next doors cat can also activate it, making it go on and off all night. Stick with the solar lamps!
